Ant (keys, guitar, percussion and horns), Kyle (guitar, keys, drums/percussion and backing vocals), Trent (vocals, guitar, keys and drums/percussion), Steph (backing vocals, keys, metallophone, melodica, accordion and saxophone), Eddie (bass, guitar, medlocia and backing vocals), and Sean (drums, horn, percussion and vocals) make up the New South Wales based band; The Seabellies, who’s live show is know for it’s variety of ‘instrumentsation’ featuring; electronica, strings, metallophone, melodica, accordion and ‘multi-percussive layering.’

‘Orange X’ is a very quirky, unusual song that has a very energetic feel to it. The mixture of the electronic instruments and guitars in the background make ‘Orange X’ a complex, but at the same time a really easy song to listen to. With so many things happening throughout the song, it’s hard to get bored or zone out. It’s a truly interesting song. The background music sounds like it’s come straight out of a computer, but it’s still fabulous to listen to.

The lead singer’s vocals fit perfectly with the quirky backing music, and he is truly a great singer. The fact that ‘The Seabellies’ have so many people in their band might have something to contribute with the complexity and utter awesomeness of their music.

‘Orange X’ is an amazing song, with awesome background music, and I give it a 4 out of 5.

‘Blood’ is a fantastic song to listen to. It’s so serene, and sends a peacefulness through the listener. Beautiful melodies and ever-so catchy hooks are prominent throughout the song, and the most epic part of the song is still amazingly beautiful and serene. ‘Blood’ is a masterpiece of a song, a joy to listen to. The lead singer’s amazing voice adds to the peaceful and oh-so serene vibe of the song. This song has a certain power over me, and upon listening I immediately feel happy and energized.

The build up throughout the song does a wonderful job of keeping me interested, and it’s amazing that I can stand listening to a song that goes for over 5 minutes, while staying interested the whole time. ‘Blood’, although the slightly morbid title that had me afraid to search for ‘the middle east blood,’ the song possibly the furthest thing from morbid that I have ever heard/seen.

Overall, ‘Blood’ by ‘The Middle East,’ is an uplifting, joy to listen to, and I rate it 4.5 out of 5.

Band, ‘British India’ was formed in Melbourne, Australia in 2004. I would probably describe them as Alternative Rock, but I have no idea what ‘Garage Rock’ means.

Upon listening to ‘Vanilla,’ I was shocked to discover that it sounded almost exactly the same as some of the other British India songs, and I was immediately disappointed. When first listening to ‘I Said I’m Sorry,’ also by them, I quite liked it, but when I listened to some more of their songs, I found them all boring and insanely similar. ‘Vanilla,’ although quite similar to their other songs, is okay, but it fails to intrigue me, or to keep me interested for the whole song. Okay, I get it, you ‘can’t breath underwater and you can’t stand in the air.’ But seriously, you surely ‘can’ bore me to tears.

Granted, the lead singer has a good voice, and I surely couldn’t do any better, but nothing in this song surprises me. It’s just so boring and predictable. ‘British India’ have some musical talent, but they have no individuality. It’s all been done before! I give this song 2 out of 5.

I couldn’t exactly find much background information on Matt Van Schie (pronounced Matt Van She), but what I do know is that he is in the band ‘Van She’, an Australian band formed in Sydney. Matt played the bass, and was the vocalist for ‘Van She’. Their record label described them as a "new band from Sydney fresh on ideas, fresher than Flavor Flav, fresh like coriander, fresher than the Fresh Prince." However their music seemed to replicate that of the eighties, but I’m here to review Matt in his solo career, not ‘Van She.’ After trolling around Matt’s myspace, and finding nothing, I am convinced that there is little to no information on exactly what type of music Matt Van Schie plays. The tagline of his myspace reads ‘Dutch pop / Italian pop / Melodramatic Popular Song.’ By I’m yet to discover what that actually means. Continue reading →

I couldn’t find much background information on Matt Van Schie (pronounced Matt Van She), but what I do know is that he is in the band ‘Van She’, an Australian band formed in Sydney. Matt played the bass, and was the vocalist for ‘Van She’. Their record label described them as a “new band from Sydney fresh on ideas, fresher than Flavor Flav, fresh like coriander, fresher than the Fresh Prince.” However their music seemed to replicate that of the eighties, but I’m here to review Matt in his solo career, not ‘Van She.’ After trolling around Matt’s myspace, and finding nothing, I am convinced that there is little to no information on exactly what type of music Matt Van Schie plays. The tagline of his myspace reads ‘Dutch pop / Italian pop / Melodramatic Popular Song.’ By I’m yet to discover what that actually means.

‘Saturday Night’ has a very interesting, very techno pop beginning, which carries on consistently throughout the song. The music in the background fits the song perfectly. The only thing with the background music that bugs me every time I listen to it is the drastic change between the verse and the chorus. It’s very jumpy, and it manages to catch me out every time I hear it. But, then again, maybe that’s a good thing. I’m not sure. The electric guitar solo towards the end is great, and really helps the song end and keeps me feeling interested while the song ends.

Matt’s vocals throughout this song are very good, and he keeps me interested with his quirky sounding voice. Although this song is very repetitive, and almost annoying to listen to on repeat, his vocal ability never ceases to amaze me every time I listen to it.

‘Saturday Night’ by Matt Van Schie is a great song overall, and I give it 3.5 out of five.

Ean Ryusuke Caskey (guitar, vocals and costume designer), Lach Kyohei Caskey, (guitar and art direction), Danjuro Rens Koyama (drums/gaffer) and Sam David Genthin-Jones (bass and first assistant director) are the four boys that make up ‘Last Dinosaurs’, an upcoming band from Brisbane, who have people divided as to whether the band’s catchy choruses and drum beats make up for the fact that it’s all been done before. ‘Last Dinosaurs’ remind me a lot of a couple of artists that I can’t quite put my finger on, all melded together.

This band has me divided, because, although ‘Last Dinosaurs’ sound like the type of music I would usually listen to, that is also the problem. While I am looking for new music, to broaden my music knowledge and taste, I do like to listen to particular genres, and this is one of them. I have so many conflicting emotions with this band and song; it’s slowly eating away at me.

The vocals in ‘As Far As You’re Concerned’ are good, although the lead singer never really pulls anything fancy or makes me really interested, but granted, he is a good singer. I have so many conflicting feelings about this song, I mean, it’s good, but it isn’t amazing, fantastic or unique in any way. Songs like these are hard to review, because I can listen to it once and fall in love with it, but then when I listen harder and more critically, it sounds exactly the same as other songs.

Nevertheless, the background music is very well done, and the lead singer is definitely suited to singing this type of music, but I think the band could have been a little bit more original in the way they made their band sound. I give this song 3 out of 5, because even though upon hearing, it sounds fun and enjoyable to listen to for enjoyment, when listening critically, the sounds and music of this song seem to have been done many times before.
Their music is very ‘electro-punk’ and their sound matches their style, with bright colours and bold hair, ‘Robots in Disguise’ surely stand out in the music crowd.

When first listening this song for the first time, I was greeted by the eerie and almost frightening beginning of two sharp breaths repeated several times. Although being seemingly irrelevant to the title ‘Turn It Up’, and making me immediately confused on exactly what I had clicked on, the eerie beginning added to the song and continued to feature consistently throughout the song, creating the highly energised but also creepy feeling that makes this song so unique.

The lyrics and vocals also complement the ‘freaky’ atmosphere that the background music creates. The two lead singers’ voices go perfectly together, but however, the part of the song between times 2.14 and 3.54 are really hard to understand, and don’t really complement the song all that much.

Altogether, ‘Turn it Up’ is a very eerie, but totally awesome song, and I give it 3 and 3/4 out of 5.

Four piece French band; Tahiti 80, met at the University of Rouen, in the mid 1990’s, and although starting out as a duet, they quickly evolved into the brilliant four piece they are today. Tahiti 80 released their first album, Puzzle, in 1999, and have recently released their latest, Activity Center. The band consists of; Xavier Boyer (vocals, guitars, bass, keyboard and piano), Médéric Gontier (guitar, vocals and keyboards), Sylvain Marchand (drums/percussion, keyboards and piano) and Wdro Resende (bass, programming, keyboards, percussion and vocals.)

The lead singer’s voice is perfectly suited to sing this type of happy go lucky song, and I doubt that Tahiti 80 could have found a better lead vocalist for their music. Although he sounds considerably better while singing in the lower ranges of the song, e.g; the verses, he still manages to pull off the higher parts of the song, e.g; the chorus, in a less than offensive manner.

During the verses in the song, the music behind the lyrics is, unlike the song implies, once listened to for about ten seconds, predictable. It is however, enjoyable to listen to. The beat in the backgrounds adds a playful and exuberant vibe to the song, and it certainly complements the lead vocalist’s voice. The music in the chorus does a good job of matching the verses while still introducing a new set of background sounds.

Overall, Unpredictable by Tahiti 80 is an upbeat, high energy song that is capable of making someone happy just by listening to the beat. I give this song 3.5 out of five.
